Oak Creek sits south of Milwaukee along Lake Michigan and has done something most of the surrounding suburbs have not. It built itself a walk-around town center from scratch.
The center of it is Drexel Town Square, an 85-acre district put up on the site of an old spark plug factory. City hall, the library, restaurants, apartments, a hotel, medical offices, an amphitheater, and a farmers market are all packed inside a few blocks. On a warm evening the amphitheater lawn fills up, restaurants have patios open, and the district behaves like a real town center.
The rest of the city stretches out in newer subdivisions and pockets of Lake Michigan bluff. Bender Park and Lake Vista Park give you public lakefront (a boat launch, beach access, trails, and elevated views) without the north-shore price tag.
Oak Creek grew fast in the last thirty years and is still growing. That means a lot of the housing here is newer than what you find in the older Milwaukee suburbs, and the price point splits between established mid-century blocks and brand-new construction.
Freeway access is excellent. I-94 runs along the western edge, and Mitchell Airport is right across the northern border. If you travel for work or need a fast route to Chicago, this is one of the easiest suburbs to live in for that.
Oak Creek is the growing far-south suburb I show buyers who want newer construction, bigger yards, and reasonable proximity to both the airport and the lake. Drexel Town Square gave Oak Creek an actual town center with restaurants, apartments, and a public square, and that has quietly changed how Oak Creek feels compared to a decade ago.
A lot of my Oak Creek buyers are first-time buyers priced out of Bay View or St. Francis, families moving up into a new-build subdivision, or professionals who want to live south of the city and have a reasonable commute to Mitchell Airport. The lake at Bender Park is a real amenity most buyers do not know about until I show them.
One thing about Oak Creek that surprises people: the city is big, and the neighborhoods inside it vary. Newer subdivisions off Ryan Road feel very different from older pockets closer to Milwaukee Avenue. Tour more than one part of Oak Creek before you settle on a search area.

What Oak Creek costs right now
Zillow's average home value for Oak Creek is about $418,000 as of May 2026, up roughly 6 percent year over year. Redfin's most recent median sale price sits at about $386,400 as of November 2025. New construction is a real share of Oak Creek's market, so the mix affects the number you see reported.

The honest tradeoffs
Oak Creek is still developing. Some newer subdivisions can feel same-y from block to block, and some retail corridors along 27th get real traffic at rush hour. The lakefront amenity at Bender Park is under-known and under-used, but it is not exactly close by foot from most of the city.
Oak Creek is neither dense nor urban. You will drive to almost everything except what is walking distance to Drexel Town Square. The trade for that is a newer, bigger, more maintenance-free home than you can get in the first-ring suburbs at the same price.
