Greenfield sits in the ring of Milwaukee County suburbs southwest of the city and prices right in the middle of the metro. It is not the newest suburb, it is not the fanciest, and it does not try to be. What it is is close, well-connected, and priced for people who want a house in the suburbs without stretching.
Freeway access is the biggest reason people end up here. I-894 cuts across the city, connecting the Zoo Interchange to the Mitchell Interchange, so the city and the airport are both easy from most Greenfield addresses. I-41 and I-43 handle the north-south routes.
The housing stock is mostly mid-century and later. Ranches, splits, some newer builds. Yards are real, blocks are tidy, and much of the city runs through the Greenfield School District (with a slice on the west side running through Whitnall).
Retail is close by. Southridge Mall (whose footprint actually straddles Greenfield and Greendale) is one of the biggest malls in the state, and the surrounding S 76th Street corridor covers big box and everyday retail. A newer multi-use trail crosses the city for walking, running, and biking.
Greenfield is one of the middle-ring suburbs that quietly does its job. It sits southwest of the city, has mid-century ranches and split-levels on most of its blocks, and hosts a lot of the affordable-for-what-you-get single-family stock in the metro. The buyers who end up in Greenfield are usually first-time buyers, young families, or downsizers who want a single-story home with a real garage on a real lot for a reasonable number.
Layton Avenue and Highway 100 form the retail spine. It is more strip-mall than village-center, but the essentials are all here, and the drive to Bay View or the city is short. Greenfield is not trying to be Whitefish Bay, and that is exactly what the Greenfield buyers I work with want.
Greenfield is very block-by-block. Some subdivisions are beautifully kept mid-century blocks with mature trees. Others feel more transitional. Tour a few streets before you commit to a specific pocket.

Not who "should" live here. Just what kind of daily life this place fits.
The honest tradeoffs
Aesthetics can feel dated. Split-levels and ranches from the 60s and 70s are the dominant housing type, and while many have been thoughtfully updated, many have not. If you want an "instagram-ready" home out of the box, Greenfield will require more shopping. If you want good bones at a price you can actually afford, the search rewards patience.
Greenfield is car-oriented. You drive to almost everything. The trade for that is a lot of house per dollar and shorter drives to the city than the outer-ring suburbs offer.
